Gerard was admitted as a Solicitor in 1996. He joined John McKee & Son in 2004 and became a Partner in the firm in 2008. Gerard's main area of expertise is in property law. He heads up the firm's Commercial Property Team and has represented developers, retail and commercial clients and institutional lenders in a wide range of transactions. Gerard Small leads an exceedingly knowledgeable team that provides advice on planning, site acquisition, development, construction contracts and landlord and tenant issues". Gerard also specialises in banking and insolvency matters. He regularly advices banks and other financial institutions in secured lending transactions and the enforcement of security. He now acts for insolvency practitioners in several administrations and administrative receiverships and for numerous fixed charge receivers. The focus of much of this work is the management and sale of distressed property assets. In addition, Gerard manages the firm's Private Client Department whose work includes conveyancing, wills/trusts and probate. The Team has particular specialism in inheritance tax planning and elderly client issues and places an emphasis on providing clients with a timely and pragmatic service. Gerard is a member of the Northern Ireland Commercial Property Lawyers' Association and the Northern Ireland Company and Commercial Lawyers' Group. Away from work, Gerard is kept busy with his young family. He enjoys travelling and has visited Kenya, Sri Lanka and Zanzibar in recent years. His interests include music, aviation and following the fortunes of the Down Gaelic Football team. He is also a member of the Northern Ireland Autism charity, Autism NI – PAPA.
