We had some short-notice questions about multiple pension quotes received by my husband and me. Chris was able to meet us immediately. He provided useful, practical and pragmatic advice which highlighted some important questions we can put back to our pension providers. I had previously consulted with Chris regarding my NHS Pension. My accountant had recommended Chris due to his in-depth knowledge of the NHS Pension Scheme.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I wanted to retire at 55. I had three pensions - my employer's defined benefit that covered most of my expenses, my employer's defined contribution and a personal defined contribution. The DB covered most of my expenses but there was a monthly shortfall. I needed the latter two to cover the shortfall over the years 55 to 67. I need confidence that my budget was correct and what the best use of the two DC pensions were.

How has Chris Friel helped you?

Firstly, Chris and I went through the budget and the graphical report indicated any shortfalls or gaps. Secondly, after analysing my risk profile, Chris recommended an approach to fill the gap and to fullfil my wishes for family inheritance. Through the process Chris suggested strategies for getting the most from our savings, reduce tax impact and address future big spends, considering my early retirement.

Yes. I am very happy with the plan and the outcome has met my expectations.

1) We had a lump sum of cash and needed guidance with respect to the most tax efficient way of investing these funds while considering withdrawals to be made in the mid to long term. 2) Needed assistance in Financial Planning and understanding in a comprehensive way how our family's current overall financial picture looks like.

Chris spent the first few meetings intently listening and fundamentally understanding what my fundamental needs are. He caught me off guard at times asking important questions, which I myself had not thought about. I initially contacted Chris when seeking advice with regards to possible irregularities in the administration of my SIPP. This is an ongoing process and without Chris's clear suggestions I would have struggled to make any headway in confronting and dealing with the situation. More recently, my wife had an income tax issue in relation to unearned income on our second property. She was very concerned and worried about possible negative outcomes. I immediately suggested she contact Chris. In speaking to him, she felt a great sense of relief and that a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She followed up on his clear advice and is now much more in control of the situation than previously. Chris really did put her mind at ease, and she feels much gratitude towards him. His analysis of our different 'problems' and subsequent advice offered was honest, transparent and effective. In our dealings with him, he has shown himself to be very personable, empathetic, and thoroughly knowledgeable in his field of business. We would certainly have full confidence in using his financial services and would highly recommend him to others.

Even though I am a highly experienced financial professional, I felt I needed someone to help validate my thoughts around asset allocation and fund selection. I wanted that extra level of professional insight to ensure I was on the right track.

elderly parent wanting to be advised that they were doing all they could to mitigate Inheritance tax and family wanting advice on best financial strategy for funding long term care if that became necessary.

How has Chris Friel helped you?

With both the above. Demonstrated clear appreciation of the issues involved and how the elderly client might be anxious or reticent about changing traditional attitudes to investments v savings v expenditure. Quite extraordinary empathy with and perception (in one so young) of how the elderly person might be feeling about their financial situation. and the changing world they were inhabiting.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Very much so. Was able to suggest changes to parent to help mitigate tax exposure and encourage them to feel more free to be spending their money on their needs now and in the short term, rather than hoarding it for 'rainy day' - that is now here. Chris's report provided powerful arguments why spending was better than letting the tax man get her money!!

What could they have done better?

Nothing. Covid restrictions meant we couldn't have a face to face which would have been good, as opposed to online meeting, but that was nothing Chris Friel could have resolved.

I downsized from a large detached bungalow to a flat. I didn't want the profit I made to sit in a bank account earning no interest. I needed some expert advice to help me invest the money wisely.

How has Chris Friel helped you?

Chris was great. Right from the start he continually questioned me to ascertain what would work best for me. When he had a clear picture of what my needs were he formulated a plan. He explained what he had put together and why it was best for meeting my needs. He went through each step with me making it easy for me to understand everything. I contacted Chris to get a phone consultation about my past and current pensions schemes that are spread around multiple insurance companies. Chris was very concise and helpful in advising me on what my options are and which one of those he thought made more sense for my circumstances. He gave me some further advice and insight into understanding how I can make my salary contribute more to my pension plan and he repeated those points again and again as I asked questions for clarifications. What made a very good impression on me was the fact that Chris was very honest with the fact that he didn't think I needed to pay any money for any outside company to handle my financial planning at this time, and he didn't try to sell me any services that I didn't need. I was very satisfied with my overall service I received from Chris, and will certainly be returning in the future if I need more advice or more specific services as a client.

What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

I was looking to the future and wanted to begin planning seriously for an early (ish) retirement. I had various pensions from previous workplaces and needed someone to help me see what it looked like in the round and give me advice on what I should do to plug any gaps so that I could retire early.

How has Chris Friel helped you?

He looked at everything I had including my existing pension, previous workplace pensions, state pension predictions and a private pension. He contacted my providers to get the most up to date forecasts and pulled all the info together. He then worked out my cashflow for different retirement scenarios showing me clearly what was achievable.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I was pleasantly surprised by what my pensions amounted to and could see what gaps there were for different retirement ages. It helped me focus and really gave me confidence that I was going to be OK. I have since checked in with Chris with some updated information and he has again helped me see what my retirement could look like financially based on this new information. I am now looking at retiring earlier than I had previously thought but would never have had the knowledge or confidence to make that decision without Chris.

What could they have done better?

Nothing. He was really accommodating and accessible. My first appointment with him was before lockdown and we met in his office. Since then our meetings have taken place on Zoom before I start work.

I contacted BlueSky initially to discuss fees for financial advice regarding my pension. Chris called me back and we had a very good chat about my circumstances and the particular issues i had regarding the pension. the information and advice Chris provided was both helpful and, with regard to one particular issue, reassuring. i didn't get to discuss fees which came as a surprise to me as i have never spoken to anyone in the financial services industry that has not been looking to make money in some way either commission or charges. i don't recommend any service or goods to anyone as i believe everyone has a different opinion on exactly what a good service is, but i would say that i will certainly contact Chris again if i believe i need to discuss any financial issue.

Having searched over a period of time for pension advice and guidance – I found Chris to be fully understanding of my needs and requirements for future financial security, while being consistently reassuringly open regarding the process of how my pension will be managed with regards to my attitude to risk and current circumstances.

How has Chris Friel helped you?

I found Chris extremely easy to communicate with - Financial planning is something I regard as a minefield, and I really struggled to find some I felt comfortable in dealing with. Chris has an openness and 'human' approach to dealing with me as a client that I found refreshing as well as reassuring. I am also in no doubt of his professionalism and attention to detail and huge wealth of knowledge in many financial matters. Always contactable – and always responding to communications in a timely and informative manner – I feel that Chris provides a very personal service where my queries or concerns have been understood and discussed with me either via email or a simple phone conversation. Basically Chris makes me feel very comfortable when discussing my investments - even during recent turbulent times. His measured, understanding and responsible attitude to clients ensures I feel that he has my interests in good order and under constant review.

~I was getting close to retirement and wanted to know what to do with my pension pots, I had 2 very different work pensions and wanted to know what was best for me

How has Chris Friel helped you?

Chris, talked with me and got me to explain my circumstances and the options that were available to me, he was very open and thorough with his descriptions and explanations, he was not directive and "pushy" but patient and very aware of my concern and worry about my predicament but his explanations and charts and diagrams were graphic and very explanatory. Chris was always honest and clearly pointed out issues and advantages where appropriate

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

I have had my first annual review and considering the situation we are in I have seen my portfolio do ok less then expected but based on the financial impact of covid that Chris explained I am happy with the performance and really happy with Chris's explanations.

What could they have done better?

I have had a really good experience with Chris throughout, I was someone with very little knowledge or understanding about retirement and pensions and everything was made clear and was set in diagrams I could clearly understand, so from my point of view nothing could have been improved upon.

I reached sixty years of age and my pension forecasts gave me the impression i would have to work another ten years before i could safely retire. By various routes i met Chris Friel and his advice and thoughtfulness allowed me to choose a different path which i am now happily on.

I'd like to thank Chris Friel for his dedication, commitment, and most of all the time he has given me over the past few years. Without his help and management of my financial affairs I wouldn't have been able to retire when I did and live the lifestyle i wanted. He is always on the end of the phone or contactable via the Internet when required. He listens patiently and advises me professionally. i couldn't ask for more and I wish him and his family only the very best.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

Yes, the time and commitment Chris has given me has allowed me retire and enjoy a lifestyle I didn't think possible. This is all down the Chris, and my thanks goes out to him.

What could they have done better?

I don't think there is a lot more he could have done. In an ideal world he could have provided dancing girls and a limitless supply of Guinness, but that would have got boring eventually and most probably quickened my route to the cemetery. I'm more than happy with the way things have gone.
