It was all a complete mine field to me and I had put the conversation off as I found talking and understanding pensions quite overwhelming.

Having not yet retired it's too early to say. From 2017 until the Covid epidemic my pension pot grew rather faster than had I left it with my previous employer. It has recovered since, and I have no reason to believe it will not do well in the future.
