What were the circumstances that caused you to initially look for an adviser?

We wanted to take a less active approach to choosing investments as we got older, and look for better returns without increased risk through better performance or lower fees.

How has Julian Frere helped you?

Julian was our first contact at the Private Office, and undertook all the initial analysis of our needs before we started to work with TPO in late 2018. He was very thorough in his approach and took the time to properly understand our position and objectives, as well as every aspect of our finances. Our initial investment decisions were based on his recommendations although we were later moved to a different advisor within TPO for day-to-day advice. More recently we have started working with Julian as our day-to-day advisor again, and we feel very comfortable with his approach. As well as excellent understanding of the investment world and access to a range of well thought out portfolios, Julian is a very good communicator and is able to explain the important issues and adjust his approach to suit any level of understanding and expertise. We enjoy our meetings with him, and feel at ease when talking to him.

Have you seen the outcome you were hoping for?

We began to use TPO at the beginning of a difficult period just before the Covid outbreak, but we think the initial decisions have generally stood us in good stead and the trouble that Julian took to understand our objectives and advise us appropriately have paid off, despite the global challenges of the last few years.

What could they have done better?

Although not directly related to Julian, our comments would seem incomplete without mentioning that over the 6 years we have used TPO there have been some administrative shortcomings, which seem to be improving over time, presumably as systems are improved.

Although I don't have the profile of a typical TPO client, Julian took great care in understanding my particular situation and helping me prioritise what I needed to do, with whom and by when. This was extremely helpful as with structure and a plan, came relief and a sense of being more organised than I thought I was. A true industry professional who places your interests first and will only propose work when there is clear value add to you.
